Cheap Car Rentals - Why Everyone Likes Cheap Rental Cars

Sidebar24 | Thursday December 31 2009 9:38 am | Comments Off

Not all of us can afford the most expensive cars, sometimes we have to settle for cheap car rentals. Now there is nothing wrong with renting a cheap car because now almost all cars are becoming more economical. Big or small rental car companies are starting more and more in today’s economy to rent at the best rates. They are there to provide you with the best price possible. If you want to get are interested in getting cheap car rentals than all you need to do is call up your local agency and explain to them what you are looking for. They can get you the cheapest rate and the best car at a decent price in almost any model they carry.

Cheap rental cars
generally have a higher mileage because they are older cars. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a more expensive car with mileage cheaper but it depends upon the agencies pricing program. Companies will generally charge for the amount of miles that you drive while you have the car as well. If you want cheap car rentals I would suggest going for unlimited mileage if you are going to be taking a long trip, if you opt for the limited mileage but go over you will create a surcharge that could skyrocket your bill to the moon!

Just make sure in order to protect yourself, you look at the mileage and make sure that it is correct before you jump to actually renting the car. For a small fee on top of the cheap one that I am sure you already have gotten, insurance can be charged to your card as well. If you already have insurance I would not recommend getting this but you do have that option as well and most companies will try to sell you their insurance to make even more profit.

A little known fact about cheap car rentals that most people don’t know is that the price can increase or decrease according to the day of the week. The price for rental cars is usually quite a bit more on the weekend than it would cost on the week days. Also during a time of festivities, like perhaps Christmas or Thanksgiving, the price of rental cars would increase and you may not be able to get them as easy as you could during the summer months.

Don’t forget that in order to get cheap car rentals you are going to want to defend yourself and not rent a car that will not be what you expect. Ask around the locality if you are not from the area about the credibility of the company if you have never heard of them. There are also quite a few companies that many people have heard about such as Avis, Hotwire, Or Orbitz but you may be able to find a cheaper deal somewhere else. Good Luck and Happy Driving!

Achieving Independence Through Disability Aids

Sidebar24 | Tuesday December 29 2009 4:55 pm | Comments Off

Introduction

Mobility - it is only really possible to appreciate what mobility means if your ability to move around freely is reduced, then it takes on a whole new meaning.

Living with someone who is partially disabled gives me an insight into the kind of issues that people with disabilities have to deal with. When you are able and sure footed there is no real understanding of the restriction of not having full mobility of your person. Besides which nobody is particularly interested unless it concerns them directly. We all take it completely for granted when everything works as it should and we get on with living our lives concentrating on making money, raising a family, having a good time and other such normal everyday activities. In fact quite often we don’t even like to see people who are disabled and struggling because it makes us aware of our own vulnerability which reminds us of our mortality. Next time you see someone who is in a wheel chair, notice your own reaction to that person, and be aware of how you avoid eye contact and carefully get out of the way. People who use wheelchairs often say how people they meet will talk to the carer and ignore them as if they are stupid as well deaf.

Early Disability Aids

The first type of disability aid that most people will be familiar with is the walking stick. For some, it will be something to make them feel more secure on their feet when they suffer some impairment in walking. If a person has a broken leg or hip then crutches for a period of time will be needed and later a stick until full mobility returns. When I broke my hip I found the most frustrating thing was that I could not carry a cup of tea from one place to another so I improvised with a trolley on wheels which I could push along. When you have to use two arm crutches as I did to get about, there are no arms left to carry anything. For non spilling things you can use a bag to carry your things in which can be attached to your crutches, but not cups of liquid. Recently when visiting my husband in hospital I watched while the nurses unpacked a Zimmer frame on which they attached a plastic box with a tray for a lid. It was fixed like a basket on a bike. The patient had to practice pushing it along, and I realised it was because he lived on his own and needed to be able to transport things but couldn’t manage without two handed support. These types of early aids are common for people as they get older and lose their youthful mobility because of age related problems. They are also required for those who have suffered accidents and injuries so that temporary mobility is affected.

Independence

One of the major frustrations for people becoming disabled is their loss of independence and freedom to be able to do what they want, when they want. If a person becomes disabled after years of normal living and independence there will be a great deal of angst and a need to make adjustments to the new situation. However, whatever the disability experienced there are a vast range of aids to help people live as independent a life as possible. Illness and injury or being born with a genetic disorder is usually the reason for lack of mobility for most people.

In the Home

When suffering loss of mobility or normal functioning whatever the reason, the first task is to create safety and functionality in the home where the level of disability determines the type of support needed.

One of the first things to consider is the quality| degree| level of comfort while resting. Correct support in bed and while sitting in a chair will allow the muscles to relax properly so that the body will function as well as possible. There are a range of Orthopaedic beds which allow for many different positions from lying to sitting and the best examples are the hospital beds where you will find electronic buttons to change the position of a patient with ease. Chairs can also be found that will allow for different positions and even a vibrating and massaging function incorporated into the frame. A friend of mine had a chair specially made which reclines, vibrates and massages in three different places and also tips forward when you want to get out for ease of standing up. When we visit we all want to have a go in it because it is such good fun.

The next trial when disabled, is the function of toilet, bathing and dressing. There are a huge range of aids to chose from such as commodes and other toilet necessities, grab rails for showers and baths. My mother is severely arthritic and cannot get into the bath anymore, so she has a seat which lowers and raises her in and out of the bath. There are also walk in baths and then specially adapted showers with stools and slip mats to aid the sufferer. Also because my mother is partially sighted she cannot read the numbers anymore, so she has a set of talking weighing scales.

Having managed the getting up, washing and dressing as well as maybe a good rest in the special chair, moving around the home will be next on the agenda. Depending of the level of incapacity it might be that a simple walking stick or Zimmer frame will support mobility. As well as grab handles in the bathroom, handles can be mounted alongside entrance doors and steps to help with negotiating different levels. Just because people suffer some sort of disability it doesn’t mean that they want to leave their homes, but when they live in a house and have stairs to negotiate then the use of a stair lift is a wonderful invention. Severely handicapped people may need a wheelchair in the home which requires a lot of space and maybe wider doorways to accommodate it.

The next activity for independent living is food preparation and dining. Standing can be a problem so a high stool to perch on might be helpful. Otherwise do as much preparation as possible sitting at the kitchen/dining table. If a person has a problem with holding cutlery and kitchen utensils, there are specially adapted items with larger handles for ease of use. With arthritis in the wrists, lifting items such as kettles and saucepans can be a problem, but there are available cleverly designed kettle and teapot tippers for ease of pouring. Using a food processer and electric gadgets will save a great deal of time and effort when preparing meals. Another simple aid which my mother found very useful is a grabbing stick or ‘Reacher’ that picks up items to save bending down.

There is a vast range of disability equipment available to improve the lives of people with limited mobility.

Maintaining the home is sometimes challenging for a disabled person. Obviously there are washing machines, dryers and dishwasher to aid with tasks in the home but you can also get remote control vacuum cleaners that are radio controlled with a joystick or key pad such as for toy boats and aeroplanes. Long handled brushes and dusters help with hard to reach corners particularly the microfiber dusters that attract dirt and dust to them.

Other items available for people who experience some level of limitation may be lever type handles for taps to make them easier to use. If a person has lost their grip there are special items to open cans, bottles and jars. Because my mother is partially sighted she has large buttons on her telephone and speed dialling so she can stay in touch with her family who are spread far and wide. She can order goods by phone which means with such aids she is able to retain her independence and stay in her own home. It seems that whatever the disability there is some clever invention to help overcome the problem.

Outside the Home

To enable a person who is disabled to live as normal a life as possible then aids outside the home are just as important as those inside. Wearing an alarm cord around the neck is a wise precaution so that if a person does get into difficulties while outside they can call for help. To be able to move around easily outside may only require a walking stick or a Zimmer frame for support but where mobility is more restricted, wheelchairs or electric scooters may be necessary. My mother used to love to garden but now the arthritis and osteoporosis has taken hold and her eyesight is impaired, she is severely limited in any activity outside. On a good day however she does have a garden stool which enables her to do some weeding and tidying of the flower beds. There are even wheeled seats for moving along the edge of flower beds when weeding. Long handled garden tools can be used to avoid bending or kneeling and raised beds will allow even wheel chair users to tackle the garden plot. Ramps may be installed to allow a wheelchair to move from one level to another, and sit-on lawn mowers are a possibility if you have a big enough lawn.

There is a relatively new product on the market called Flexiloc which is a modular system of tough polyurethane tiles that interlocks to form ramps of any size. It has the advantage of being able to run straight, turn corners, be used indoors or outdoors and has a good grip surface that is more comfortable than conventional surfaces. It can be used as a temporary solution where a permanent ramp is not possible and is easily dismantled to be reused again and again.

If a disabled person relies on a wheelchair then automatic gates and garage doors which open remotely is a big help. Cars or vans used for transporting electric scooters are usually specially tailored vehicles with ramps or lifts to allow the mobility scooter to be loaded up. Sometime cars may have to be adapted to allow for the lack of functioning of particular limbs. My husband cannot manage the foot pedal movement required for gear changing so we have switched to an automatic car to enable him to still drive.

Anyone suffering a lack of mobility will find wheelchair mobility an enormous help in getting about outside the home.

There is a extensive range of mobility scooters available both new and second hand. The mobility scooter is mostly a four wheeled vehicle which travels between four and eight miles an hour. However for the electric scooter there seems to be more three wheeled versions which travel at a maximum of six miles per hour. The speed is determined on the weather, the terrain and riders weight. A three wheeled scooter is inherently less stable and unless greater manoeuvrability is required it is better to get the four wheeled variety. Some scooters can be completely folded up to go into the boot of a car. The scooter usually has a chair with arms mounted over the battery enclosure with handlebars like a bike for turning and controls in reach of the hands. They are very easy to operate and comfortable to ride. The chairs vary with the amount of padding and enclosed back, usually the more expensive the more padding there is.

As well as the open versions of mobility scooters there are enclosed ones to protect the passenger from rain and wind. These come with lights, windscreen wipers, full suspension, mirrors and lockable doors as with a car and can cover larger distances. I have seen them in my local area travelling along the road rather than on the pavement.

Home Remote Controls

Where an individual is physically unable to get about inside or outside the home the use of remote controls is a valuable aid. Being able to manage and operate your entertainment centre remotely is only one of the possibilities. The availability of remote controls for opening and closing of blinds and curtains, switches for electrical equipment such as ovens, lights, cooking appliance and washing machines, is a boon. For people who cannot easily answer the door there is a keyless door entry system designed to fit most latch locks which enable the elderly, the disabled and partially sighted who have difficulty using keys, to manage their security remotely.

One story I read in the paper a few weeks ago was of a young man who was so obese, in the region of forty stone, that he could not move out of his bed. He had an entertainment centre in his room remotely controlled and he ordered food online to be delivered to his house. There were three healthcare workers in attendance at all times to turn him in bed and see to his bodily needs; as well as people to prepare for him the food he had ordered. He was waiting for a stomach operation to staple his stomach together to reduce his intake of food. And all this was paid for by the tax payer. My feeling was that if there was no one to take such good care of him he would soon lose weight because he would not be able to get about and eat all that food.

Having read that story I question the value of having remote controls so easily available, because the forced activity of getting up and out of your chair to change channels is at least exercise to keep your circulation going. However for people who cannot move around easily then remote controls are a boon I am sure.

Conclusion

For the children who were born with a physical disability, may never know what it is like to be fully mobile and they may always yearn to live a normal life. For those who were once completely functional, when they become disabled they have to come to terms with their loss and face up to their own mortality. If the time comes when you are no longer able to do all the things you used to do, then be sure there are many creative aids to help you maintain as much independence as possible.

An Insight into Shooting Stock Photography

Sidebar24 | Tuesday December 29 2009 9:33 am | Comments Off

Introduction

Welcome to An Insight into Stock Photography. This article is based on a talk given at Focus on Imaging 2007. I hope you find it interesting. Just remember these are my views only, they are not gospel and have been put together based solely on my experience of shooting and making money from stock photography, primarily through Alamy and photographic magazines.

We’ve seen a lot of change in the markets and the economy in general. This has affected the stock photography market. But don’t lose hope, magazines and newspapers have an insatiable appetite for images.

One Approach

Fingers in pies - and finding opportunities to build a business from photography. And stock photography is just part of that - a chance for someone else to sell your images for you and to for you to get paid, while off doing something else. It’s like having commission only sales people working for you. The thing is you have to give them something saleable but you can’t give them a kick up the backside if you’re not selling much!!

Some professional photographers don’t do it, some do, some make a living from it. The choices and balance is up to you, as a commercial photographer I do some of it.

It may seem like a big step but it’s not and it’s within most people’s grasp. Provided you understand the customer. This applies to both the Picture Library and the Ultimate Buyers.

Take a look around you. Pictures are everywhere - the printed media in its widest context has a massive need hunger for images on a daily basis.

Humans generally don’t like reading online - well not for very long - they like tactile magazines to flick though and dip into and if they didn’t, the magazine industry would be long gone by now - wouldn’t it !!

Every magazine, exhibition, web site, company brochure and newspaper all need pictures on a regular basis - and if they don’t have it or can’t send a photographer to go out and shoot it - then they’ll buy it.

Printed media works on deadlines that go right down to the wire, so immediacy is important and the shots can’t be the same old ones used month in month out.

The corporate buyer generally will work to longer lead times and less tight deadlines - but not always - the images they buy can be more general or iconic - like these motivation posters you see in some shops .

Take for instance a sports shot of runners on a track - you might see it in the sports pages of a newspaper for a day, then maybe in a Athletics magazine that month - but it can soon become a poster with a motivational statement “Defeat” or “Winner” that has a whole new market.

So where are you - the photographer - in the pecking order so to speak. Take a look below.

• The Photographer
• The Stock Library
• The Picture Buyer

You’re on the top of the list with the stock library between you and the buyer, but at the bottom of the food chain when it comes to getting paid. But whilst you need to meet the technical requirements of the library and other submission requirements, it’s the picture buyer you must be thinking of long before you even contemplate picking up the camera.

The image library will do the sales and marketing of your images, for a fee which varies from library to library, but they must have images that buyers want.

Before you sign up, read through the agreement and see if the set up suits your requirements.

Diverse Sectors

Each of these publications, Gossip magazines, The Times Newspaper, Corporate Publications, serve a specific market - but each buy photos from Alamy to mention just one library - they also buy from many others too - in order to make the publication that day, week or month.

So what sort of pictures do these publications buy? Well it’s very varied. Just browse through and look at the side of the shot, it’s likely to have an image source next to it.

• Take a Break - items / products, staged poses - youth etc.
• Daily mail - travel
• Environment - utilities, waste, pollution etc, - front cover.

Easy Money - NO!

Some say it’s a numbers game - true to some extent, but the way I look at it is this, if you’ve got 10,000 images of shots that won’t sell - you’ve got very little.

For me as a professional photographer that provides photography services, it’s the long term view - looking to develop and maintain a set of saleable images.

Remember pictures are perishable - i.e. - they become stale - and this will vary dependent upon the industry sector or subject they apply to.

Transport, fashion, IT, business, communications all need, in my view, re-shooting each year. For example a man in a suit by a computer the size of a house in the 1950’s isn’t the modern industry image of today.

Wildlife, sky scenes, landscapes, travel pictures - less so - but look at any developing city - take London - since the Wheel and the Gherkin went up all the skylines are out of date , also look at Dubai - developing all the time.

Easy money - no it’s not - but you can build up an underlying income if you think about saleable pictures and keep them relevant - remember they have to illustrate a story - so need to tell a story in their own right.

What is Stock

So let’s take a look at how you get started and who there is to choose from. Each Library has its own benefits and key target markets, so find one that suits you and what you are good at shooting.

• Getty
• Alamy
• Comstock
• Jupiter
• Superstock
• Fotolibra
• Istockphoto,
• Pixtal
• Jumpimages
• Adams
• Nevstock

Most will have web sites and these will stipulate how to join of make submissions.

$ Sites

For me I don’t like them and here’s why. I’m going to set you a challenge and at the end of it I will buy the photograph off you. So you go and shoot a subject you like, do your research, do the shoot, post produce the image and upload it to my site and hey presto - I pay you 50p at today’s exchange rate — any takers ? I rest my case!

Submission Rules

All stock libraries will set technical requirements and these will vary depending on how much server space they want to invest in.

Alamy work to 48mb TIFF minimum - 1, to keep the bar high enough that only the serious photographer applies and 2, to give their customers’ choice and immediate access to high quality images. Now they’ve changed this from the above to accept JPEG images - so your file size is down to around 8 meg.

Others work on thumbnail sizes then let the buyer contact you. Personally, I think, trying to judge a shot off a 100 or 200k image is not doing the shot justice.

Others specify minimum specifications of camera / model, or make you go though an approval or recommendation process. The thing with this is to find a library that matches your needs and capabilities. Also the amount time you have available to dedicate to stock photography.

Licenses

Non-Exclusive License

The buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image, but another image buyer can also purchase and use the image under the same licence.

The image buyer must specify, each time: intended use, media, territory and duration.

Pricing is based on intended use, media, duration and territory. The territorial pricing will be matched to the specific country.

Exclusive License

The image buyer pays a licence fee each time they use the image.

The image buyer obtains exclusive use of an image under the terms of the licence: these terms may affect the use, media, territory and/or duration in which the image can by used by other buyers.

Rights protection can be an advantage for high-profile projects such as ad campaigns and promotions.

Royalty Free (RF)

The image buyer pays a one-off fee - they do not have to pay royalties to contributors on a use-by-use basis.

The picture buyer will not know who else is using the image.

The image buyer should check that the image has the appropriate releases before using the image where a release is required, for example Model release for people and property release for prominent buildings or logos.

Commission

  • 50/50
  • 60/40 but with global distribution
  • 70/30
  • 80/20 - Photographers Direct

Again find one that works for you and also find out when you’ll get paid and any minimum balances you must have to get paid. Sometimes you can wait 3 months for your money.

Work Flow

As a provider of photography services I shoot RAW and make minor adjustments to images. Now I’m using Adobe Lightroom in place of Raw Shooter and it’s speeded up my work flow considerably. Photoshop - I use this far less now but only to colour and touch out any dirt or what might look like dirt - by this I mean the occasional bird in the sky can look like sensor dirt if it’s a way off in the distance. Resize your image. Output the file to the required format.

Then depending on the library upload over the Internet or cut a CD / DVD.

An Example

Take an older camera the Nikon D70 - 6.1 mega pixel camera. Raw files were around 4 or 5 MB and a TIFF was at 17MB with the JPEG at 4MB.

To meet the submission guidelines you need to Interpolate the image - make it bigger. In Photoshop this was Image > Image Size>Percent. Increase by 168% to give a 48 - 50 MB sized image. Then Save as Jpeg - 5 - 7MB.

I now shoot on a Nikon D300. RAW files are now 18 - 19 mb, opened in CS3 at 34 mb - requiring interpolation by only 20%.

What I’ve Sold

Wonderful sunsets, superb travel pictures, glamour images, or maybe my Dad’s cat! These are just a few examples of shots that have sold.
My dad’s cat, police cars, road signs, street scenes in New York, studio models and traffic jams.

Finding More Value

There are plenty of magazines that will promote your sold work, FPME (Now out of print March 2009) is just one of them and if you have sold a shot just let the editor know - chances are it can earn you some more money.

Not only that, look out for sites like Photographer Direct that offer an Image Request service - all you need to do is send 1 email. Also look to the corporate clients - they too may take an image if it fits with their style - be brave, make that approach, but do your research first.

Top Tips

  • Find a stock library that suits you
  • Don’t be put off by submission specifications
  • Know your end image buyer
  • Start shooting what you are comfortable with - then move on
  • Check out what pictures already exist
  • Read the Picture Needs
  • Remember pictures images are perishable
  •

Check out how many images of your subject matter already exist in a library, then ask yourself - can these be improved, shot differently or updated.

Read the picture needs issued by Stock libraries, they tell you what sells and what is needed, don’t ignore them.

Thank you for reading this article, I hope you found it interesting, should you have any questions, please feel free to make contact through the web site.

A Review of Canon’s Newest Camcorders

    Sidebar24 | Tuesday December 29 2009 9:30 am | Comments Off

Camcorders have continually been well-favored in every part of the world with designs getting chic and stylish as time passes. Similar to designs, the methodology that is incorporated into these camcorders also get more avantgarde.

With the exposure consumers have with gear in this day, quite a number have become “prosumers’ in their choice of interest, be it videography or photography, and are for sure more able with brand new technologies. Looking at the trend, Canon just released a couple of flash-based AVCHD camcorders - the Canon HF S10 and HF S11.

The Canon HF S10 was designed for the “pro” prosumer and it records 1,920×1,080 60i video with a bigger and faster f1.8 10x HD lens and a relatively large high-resolution 1/2.6-inch 8-megapixel CMOS sensor. It is also laden with features which are by and large found in high-end camcorders, enabling the regular prosumer to up their videography skills.

Similar to the Canon HF S10, the flash-based AVCHD Canon HF S11 camcorder was launched together. It has features like the HF S10, except they differ in internal memory. The Canon HF S11 comprises 64GB while the Canon HF S10 only serves up half as much, 32GB. Also, the Canon HF S11 offers Dynamic SuperRange OIS which is designed to make up for times when the videographer is walking or when videos are taken at wide angles, and Advanced Snapshot mode where individuals are able to pull 4-sec clips from videos they have captured.

Canon’s HF S10 and HF S11 give end-users a lot more control over depth of field than regular prosumer camcorders, with a shutter speed range of 1/8 to 1/2,000 seconds and aperture options ranging from f1.8 to f8 and sport Cine mode for adjusting color and gamma to go with its 24F progressive modes. Other abilities consist of Video Snapshots for a “highlights reel” effect, 24Mbps bit rate and 17 Mbps performance and quality and DIGIC DV III with optical stabilization, rendering the Canon HD S10 ideal for pros wanting a complementary camcorder or prosumers who want up their video-taking skills.

Before you rush out to purchase your camcorder, be sure to look at the wide variety of camcorder reviews to be certain you made the ideal pick!

Free government tax foreclosure sales: hurrah for public domain

    Sidebar24 | Monday December 28 2009 10:36 am | Comments Off

The information about free government tax foreclosure sales is available for anyone who knows where to look for it. That is because of public domain laws allow all public records to be seen by any member of the public. This not only includes foreclosure sales, but tax records and who owns the property. All of this can be found out by visiting the local tax collectors office.

There are sites on the internet that have the listings of tax foreclosures available. Most are charging a slight fee for this service. If you are just interested in the foreclosures in your local area then it might be to your advantage to check with the local tax assessor’s office.  This is the least expensive way but it requires you to take the time to do down to the office and search through he files.

For most of us, we do not mind paying too much for free information from the government, since we did not have to deal with a governmental worker. Unfortunatly, most governmental workers are underpaid and have been employed for a long period of time. The work ethics of most of these workers are well known for being less than helpful and even less than polite.

For those that do their jobs I commend you, I wish all governmental workers would takepride in their jobs, but unfortunate they don’t. Asking for help with the free government tax foreclosure sales is a way you can find this unfortunate fact out.

    Hydrilla

    Sidebar24 | Sunday December 27 2009 10:07 am | Comments Off

Hydrilla is an aquatic fresh water plant. The Hydrilla will grow to the waters surface from a depth of up to 20 feet. This very common water flora can be found in all sorts of water: rivers, lakes, fens, springs and the like. Hydrillas can grow only a few inches in water, but they can also grow to about 20 feet deep underwater. The Hydrilla can flourish in either oligotrophic (low nutrient) or eutrophic (high nutrient) water conditions.

The tolerance temperature level of a Hydrilla is 20o C to 27o C; thus, it can’t stand harsh climates. This freshwater plant, Hydrilla, branches abundantly and when it gets to the surface, it unfolds its branches and forms dense mats. The underwater stems of the Hydrilla can be as long as 25 feet. The Hydrilla roots, also know as Rhizomes, are  oftentimes than not off-white or yellowish in color. | The roots or Rhizomes of the Hydrilla are ofttimes yellow or off-white in color. } The Hydrilla has several options when it comes time to procreate. When it is time to multiply the Hydrilla accomplishes this in one of four ways: fragmentation, seeds, tubers and turions (auxiliary buds).

The Hydrilla has many positives on its side when compared to other marine floras. Only one percent sunshine is need for the Hydrilla to grow. These floras also take up the rich nutrients from its place so that the other native sources can’t get it.Hydrillas can grow very speedily, vying with the indigenous species, and that’s why it is considered a pestilent pest. Hydrilla is especially dangerous because it can almost entirely take over a body of water before appearing on the surface. When it covers a big area, all the aquatic floras that fall under it die due to the lack of sunlight or nutrition. When Hydrilla encompasses a large area, all the other aquatic floras fail because the do not receive enough sunlight or nutrients.

Millions of dollars are spent each year on herbicides and harvesting devices in an attempt to keep this floras growth under control. Hydrilla harms the vegetation in the immediate area making it near impossible for fishermen to fish. Slowed water flow and blocked up irrigation or flood control channels are as a result of Hydrilla over growth. Hydrilla impedes swimmers, boatmen and fishermen alike. Oxygen levels in waters full of Hydrilla can ofttimes drop severely.

Elodea and Egeria are ofttimes confused for Hydrilla. The aquatic plants Elodea and Egeria are often thought to be Hydrilla. Hydrilla can be identified by the teeth found on the underside of the midrib. But for Elodea and Egeria, this is not present. Because of the teeth, Hydrilla will feel rough. Hydrilla will feel rough due to the presence of the teeth on the bottom of the plant. Also the Hydrilla has smaller blooms than the Egeria.

Hydrilla is eaten by macro and micro invertebrates. Upon dying, these micro and macro organisms disintegrate and become food for other land and aquatic wildlife. When this plant dies, their rotting is done by bacteria and fungi and provides food called “detritus” for many aquatic invertebrates. Ducks frequently eat Hydrilla turions and tubers, but this is not a substantial source of food. Ducks will frequently feed on the tubers and turions of Hydrilla, but they don’t make a great diet.

The Beauty of an Indian Wedding Ceremony

    Sidebar24 | Sunday December 27 2009 9:41 am | Comments Off

Traditional Indian wedding ceremonies are a grand affair. The number of people attending a wedding could be anywhere between 500 to 1000. Here, the sanctitude of the ceremony is preserved through various traditional rituals, and is accompanied by lots of entertainment, fun, colorful dresses, delicious food, music and dance. One can see lots of variations in the Indian wedding traditions according to the cultural community, religion and region. However, most of the basic ceremonies remains unchanged.

The main wedding ceremony is preceded by two major events. One is the engagement ceremony and the other is the Mehendi or Sangeet ceremony. Both the occasions are celebrated with music, dance and merriment. The main ceremony begins with the arrival of the Baraat. It includes a procession where friends, family members and the relatives of the groom take part. The members of the Baraat are called the Baraatis. There is a lot of music, dance and enjoyment in this gathering.

When the Baraatis reach the wedding venue, the brides family gives them a warm welcome. The groom can enter the venue only after the brides mother performs a ritual called Aarti in front of the groom. Soon after the entry of the groom, the Jaimala ceremony takes place where the bride and groom meet each other and exchange garlands. Once this ritual is over, the guests and relatives presents the couple with wedding gifts and congratulate them.

Then, comes the most important section of the wedding, where the bride and the groom exchange vows in front of God while chanting slokas (hymns) with the priest. After that the Phera ritual takes place where a knot is tied with a part of brides dress and the grooms dress, and they move around the ceremonial fire for seven times. Each round or phera has its own significance. In the first three rounds, the groom follows the bride which signifies that the bide will take charge in the earlier part of their life, and in the next four rounds the groom leads which means he would lead in the later part. In some communities, there is a ritual of putting sindoor on the brides parting of the hair and a necklace called mangal sutra around her neck. Most of the married Hindu women are supposed to wear sindoor in their hair parting for the rest of their married lives.

The ceremony is followed by feast in which the most sumptuous food is served. The best possible delicacies are prepared for the occasion. The food largely depends upon the region to which the couple belong to. Like in some communities, only vegetarian foods are served, while in others you will find all types of food. Another interesting feature of the traditional Indian wedding ceremony is the games. Hiding the Shoes is the most popular among them. It is a kind of prank played by the brides sisters on the groom. Before the start of marriage rituals, as soon as the groom removes his shoes, his sister in laws hide them somewhere. Later, they demand money from the groom in exchange for his shoes. Lots of negotiations and bargaining takes place between the two parties until they finally reach an agreement. The process of the bargaining is the part where there is lots of fun and everyone enjoys a lot.

The common feature of all Indian wedding ceremonies is that both the parties take the best possible efforts to make the event a successful one. It is not just a celebration of marriage between two people, rather it is a joyful occasion to celebrate the unification of two families.
