We are used to throwing away everything, but for some reason we want to keep our baby’s items forever. Even so, when you are expecting a baby, people can’t wait to pass on their cribs and crib bedding. Because babies are expensive business, be grateful for those offerings of baby bedding and baby cribs. Before using any baby bedding, be sure that it is completely safe.

Whether it is a Moses basket or a crib, your baby’s first crib is the most memorable. The best time to check a crib for its safety is when you are given a hand-me-down crib and you are spending some time refinishing it. You may have new looking bedding and crib, but you must always check them for safety purposes. Wicker cradles or cribs can chip and splinter very easily so it’s always a good idea to triple check them for sharp edges and it’s always a good idea to replace the mattress because it may not be holding up as well as it should. When you are putting the bed skirt on, check it over so you can snip off any loose threads or dangling pieces of material that the baby might rip off and put in his/her mouth.

When you are putting up new drapes, check to see that there are no loose threads or dangling material that a baby might be able to get a hold of and put in his/her mouth. The Juvenile Product Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in the USA and British Standards(BS) in the UK concerned about the safety of baby furnitures, warn that new furnitures and bedding should be bought for the crib if possible. Look out for products which either display JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark, as they have been tested painstakingly to meet all the safety regulations.

Hand-me-downs may be ecologically friendly, as well as generous, preventing the loss of perfectly good furniture and baby bedding. Since your baby will be in his or her crib for extended periods of time it is important you spend the time inspecting it. You need to take all the necessary precautions to ensure your babies safety and well being. Here are some tips to bear in mind when assessing the safety of the equipment you have for your baby. The most important issue is that of paint, check for lead paint, and any chipped or peeling pieces and that the surface is smooth to the touch to prevent baby’s clothes from catching. Make sure you purchase a crib where the bars are extremely close together, (closer than 2 & 3/8 inches apart), and there are no holes anywhere, to protect your baby’s head. If your crib wobbles you must check the joints and fixings to assure that they are tightened. It should only take one hand to raise and lower the side rail. Once raised, it should be fully secured. The mattress should be solid and clean and the side rails of the crib should be no less than 22 inches higher than the crib mattress.

A new mattress that would fit in the crib is always better. Nursery bedding can present a risk of suffocation, so tie bumper strings tightly and ensure that the baby can’t pull down the bumper, or simply remove the bumper. For babies under a year old, overheating can be caused by using duvets, quilts, sheepskin, and pillows. Put something to measure the temperature and utilize blankets and sheets in the room. The crib should not be next to lamps or window blinds, etc Babies grow quick and try to climb.

Always remember your children grow up quickly so it is great to have a wonderful, safe, and fun time with your child.
