New parents need a lot to get started, and a baby shower is one of the best ways to help make that happen. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. Some people consider it improper to have a second-baby shower, since it was unlikely that mom and dad would need very much, especially the big-ticket items. However, having a second-baby shower is still appropriate, if you make certain adjustments.

Instead of a full shower, you could host a mini-shower, where guests only bring those necessities that every baby has to have - bath accessories, undershirts, diapers, etc. You might ask the parents to list whatever items they never got or need to replace from the first time around. Some people choose to hold a shower where the gifts are for mom, with guests bringing items that she’ll likely need during the final weeks leading up to, as well as after, the birth. These gifts might be luxury items like a box of decadent chocolates, or perhaps something practical, like a stationery set to respond to gifts.

Your shower can be extra entertaining if everyone brings gifts that remind mom that she is also a woman - fun items like a comfy lace nighty or a yummy alcoholic beverage. You might want to arrange for tickets or gift certificates to some special event or treat, like a concert or spa day - but be sure to include babysitting. Another idea is to have a planning meeting with dad and the guests before the party, in order to schedule days and times where help is likely to be needed, using a dry-erase calendar.

Some tasks that you could arrange for include getting the house organized and laundry done so mom and baby can come home to a clean house, helping transport the older child to his/her activities, or going along to help out on a big grocery or warehouse club run. After being sure to get down all the names and phone numbers of the helpers, present the finished calendar to mom at the shower. There are situations where neither baby nor mom are in need of any new items. You can also just have a straight-up party, intimate or with many friends and family, to celebrate the upcoming birth.

You could ask the guests to buy baby items, smaller items like diapers and clothing, and then bring them to donate to a women’s charity or shelter. A “freezer party” is another practical theme for a shower, where everyone comes with a freezeable or easily-stored dish of food. Mom will appreciate this help in the last days of her pregnancy and immediately after the birth. If having this kind of a shower, however, you’ll need to let mom know so she can see if she has enough space for everything, as well as choose a date very close to her delivery date.

Do keep in mind that in the case of caboose babies (a “caboose” baby is born several years after the next-oldest sibling), a full shower can be held with no impropriety. Many times even the “big” items will no longer be around, or will need safety updates, so mom and dad will appreciate all the help they can get.

Keep in mind that the main reason you are there, no matter what kind or how many gifts are given, is to celebrate the upcoming birth and show the mom your support.
