If you’re at the point where you’re sitting at the computer googling, “Declutter My Home,” then you’re at the point where you’re looking for some much needed help and new ideas to deal with your clutter!  When clutter takes over our homes, it affects us physically by feeling cramped, tripping over stuff, and may limit how we use our homes when furniture and beds are covered.  It also affects us mentally by causing stress, feelings of being overwhelmed and embarrassment. The amazing thing is that once you get started, you can start feeling the stress leave almost immediately as you start taking action.

As a professional organizer, I always want to stress that you can break down the decluttering process by taking it a little at a time.  One drawer at a time even.  Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to take on the whole house at once.

So today, do this:

1.    Choose 1 drawer to tackle.

2.    Bring a garbage can and a donation bag next to the drawer.

3.    Dump out the drawer on a counter or table.

4.    Put all items that are the same type together.  Example-in a kitchen drawer, place all spatulas together, all wooden spoons together, etc.

5.    Look at your items and decide which ones are in the best shape to keep, throw away the bad ones and donate the rest.

6.    Place everything you will keep back in the drawer, use drawer dividers if you have them.
Now tomorrow, do the same thing with another drawer.  You can declutter your home just a little bit at a time!
