Green living: how to make a positive contribution to the life of our planet. Something is better than nothing, so making some changes to help the planet, especially when they also help you directly, is a good move. These are some very simple green living ideas that you can easily put into practice. Green living: making lifestyle choices with the health of the environment in mind.

A green living lifestyle aims to reduce the release of carbon, which is contributing to global warming, but also reduces waste, toxins in the air and water and over-use of natural resources. Many of these strategies also save you money and improve your health.

There are numerous changes you can make in your lifestyle to reduce carbon emissions. Find other ways to travel instead of jumping in your car. Take public transport or car pool to work. Improve your health by walking more or cycling. You will be improving both the environment and your health.

Help to save the environment by swapping the incandescent light bulbs in your home for compact fluorescent ones that need less power to light. Reduce energy consumption by around 70% by changing to CFLs; they last much longer too. By replacing just 5 of your incandescent bulbs, you can reduce your electricity bills by about $50 a year, so how much will you save if you replace every bulb in your home?? Save power by turning all household appliances off at the wall.

Improve the health of the environment and your body by eating more plant foods; plants remove carbon for the atmosphere and store it in the soil. This is another way to help both your health and that of the environment. Cattle are detrimental to the environment by compacting the soil and producing methane gas. A healthy diet for you and the planet includes only limited small amounts of red meat, and more poultry and fish.

The three Rs of caring for the environment are Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Plastic comes from oil and oil supplies are being depleted, so try to limit your use of plastics in the home. Find new ways to reuse the plastic supermarket bags before you have to throw them out. Stop and think before you print out an email, memo or article to try and reduce paper use. Think creatively to find additional uses for plastic containers, packaging and bottles.

Water is a precious resource so cut down on how much you use. By reducing your shower time by just 2 minutes will save a significant amount of water. Never turn taps on full; much of that water is wasted as it runs down the sink. Collect the rinse water from your washing machine to water your plants. Try alternative ways to heat and cool your home like solar power, blinds that regulate the temperature and plants around the house to control temperatures.

There are many more ways you can help the planet in your daily life. Look for additional methods of lowering your impact on our fragile environment that also help your own health. Encourage your children to be involved; they will have lots of great ideas.
